The Central Coast Hinterland
Most people who holiday on the Central Coast never leave the coastline, and it's easy to see why. But drive inland for twenty-five to forty minutes from any of our four towns and the region changes completely. The beaches give way to bushland, working farms and a stretch of national park thick enough that it's easy to forget the coast is this close behind you.
This is worth building into a longer stay rather than treating as an afterthought. A Central Coast day trip inland breaks up a week of beach time nicely, and if you're after things to do inland on the Central Coast beyond another beach, this is where to start, heritage roads, working farms and a proper stretch of national park all within reach. For anyone who's done the coast a few times already, the hinterland is the part most visitors miss entirely.
A Heritage Drive Worth Taking
The Great North Road, a World Heritage listed convict-built route, runs through this part of the region, and the signposted Tourist Drive 33 follows much of it, linking Mooney Mooney, Mount White, Somersby, Calga, Glenworth Valley, Peats Ridge, Mangrove Mountain, Kulnura and Yarramalong. It's the kind of drive that rewards taking slowly rather than treating as a point-to-point trip.
Mount White is worth calling out specifically. Saddles Mount White, a homestead-set cafe, restaurant and bakehouse surrounded by garden and national park, has become one of the genuine destination stops along the route rather than just a place to stop for petrol. It's the kind of spot that turns a drive into an actual outing.
💡 Worth Knowing
Tourist Drive 33 isn't a single road with one name, it's a signposted route stitched together from several roads through the hinterland. Following the brown tourist signage is more reliable than trying to navigate it purely from memory or a general map.
National Park and Waterfalls
Brisbane Water National Park sits at the heart of the hinterland, and Somersby Falls is the easiest way to experience it without committing to a full day of walking. It's an 800 metre return track through rainforest to a series of waterfalls, manageable for most fitness levels and well worth the short detour if you're already out this way. We've covered this in more depth, along with the rest of the region's walking tracks, in our guide to outdoor adventures on the Central Coast.
Farm Gates and Produce
This is the part of the hinterland that surprises people most. The Yarramalong Valley and Mangrove Mountain area is genuine farming country, and operations like Fanelli Organics and Food Farm give visitors a proper look at where produce actually comes from, rather than a curated tourist version of it. Expect pick-your-own seasonal produce, farm-gate stalls and the kind of family-friendly farm experience that's a world away from a beach day.
Wildlife and Adventure
The hinterland is also where most of the region's bigger wildlife and adventure operators sit. The Australian Reptile Park at Somersby and Australia Walkabout Wildlife Park at Calga, which runs an after-dark nocturnal tour finishing around a campfire, both make for a properly different day out, and Glenworth Valley adds horse riding and quad biking into the mix. All three are covered in more detail, alongside the rest of the region's adventure activities, in our outdoor adventures guide.
Central Coast Accommodation - Where to Stay
The hinterland makes a great day trip, but it's not where you'll find accommodation, this is coastal country, and that's exactly the appeal of pairing the two. HolidayCo. manages accommodation across Killcare, Pearl Beach, Ettalong Beach and The Entrance, all of which put you within a 25 to 40 minute drive of the hinterland while keeping the beach, the local dining and everything else our towns offer right on your doorstep. Killcare and Pearl Beach are the shorter drive to the Mount White and Somersby cluster, while Ettalong Beach and The Entrance both work well as a base for the full Tourist Drive 33 loop. Wherever you stay, spend your days out west and come back to the coast every evening.
