How to Explore the Central Coast with Your Furry Friend

Feb 9, 2024

Just 90 minutes north of Sydney, the stunning NSW Central Coast isn’t only a playground for humans-it’s a dream destination for dogs, too. With endless sandy beaches, leafy parks, pet-friendly cafés, and welcoming holiday homes, it’s the perfect spot to make memories with your four-legged family members by your side.

In this guide, HolidayCo. shares some of the best places to walk, eat, and stay so you and your pup can enjoy the ultimate coastal escape together.

Where to go Walking

The Central Coast is famous for its relaxed, dog-friendly vibe. Whether your pooch loves chasing waves or sniffing through bush trails, there’s no shortage of spots to explore.

One of our favourites is the southern end of Umina Beach-wide open sand, gentle waves, and plenty of space for a good run. Just around the corner, Ettalong Beach also offers an off-leash stretch where dogs can paddle and play.

For a slower pace, start your day at Patonga, a quiet seaside village with calm, shallow water-perfect for pups who prefer wading over wave-jumping. Pearl Beach delivers postcard-worthy views and soft sand for pawprints, while Hardys Bay is a gateway to Putty Beach (dogs aren’t allowed in Bouddi National Park, so check signs before you go).

Heading north? North Avoca Beach, near Terrigal, is another favourite among locals for its dog-friendly atmosphere.

Prefer the shade of the bush over the sun and surf? Strickland State Forest is a hidden gem, with eucalypt trails, rainforest pockets, and even a suspension bridge to cross together. Try the Arboretum Track and let your pup cool off with a splash in the creek

Where to Eat & Drink

The Central Coast has no shortage of places where you and your dog can grab a bite together.

  • The Box on the Water, Ettalong Beach – Takeaway fish and chips, burgers, or tacos, and enjoy them with a view of the bay.

  • Link & Pin Café, Woy Woy – Live music in the courtyard, all-day menus, and a relaxed vibe that’s as friendly to pups as it is to people.

  • Terrigal Beach House, Crowne Plaza – An outdoor terrace overlooking the sand, live music, and a menu of seaside classics.
