Brunswick Heads, Pottsville or Ocean Shores? Choosing Your North Coast Base

Oct 29, 2026

Two families can book the same week on the NSW North Coast, 25 minutes apart, and come home with completely different holidays. One spent every day on foot: breakfast in the village, the river by mid-morning, fish and chips on the grass at dusk. The other barely saw a shop, and spent the week between a quiet beach, a creek and the back deck.

Neither got it wrong. They just chose different towns. Between Brunswick Heads and Cabarita Beach, the villages are close enough to visit each other easily, but each one sets a very different pace. This guide puts them side by side, says plainly who each one suits, and what you give up by choosing it.

For a general introduction to the region, our Brunswick Heads and Tweed Coast holiday guide is the place to start. This page is for the next step: deciding where to base yourself.

The short answer: which North Coast town is best for you?

  • Best for walking everywhere and mixed groups: Brunswick Heads.
  • Best for young children: Pottsville, with Brunswick Heads a close second.
  • Best for surf and teenagers: Cabarita Beach, Bogangar and Hastings Point.
  • Best for quiet beaches and dog owners: New Brighton and South Golden Beach.
  • Best for a residential base between the beaches and the hinterland: Ocean Shores.
  • Best for Byron Bay day trips without staying in Byron: Brunswick Heads, about 20 minutes away.

Drive times below are approximate and assume normal traffic. Expect them to stretch on summer weekends, particularly around Byron Bay.

Brunswick Heads: for leaving the car parked

At a glance

  • Pace: lively village, walkable
  • Calm water: Simpsons Creek and the Brunswick River
  • Off-leash beach: yes, south of the surf club
  • Byron Bay: about 20 minutes
  • Gold Coast Airport: about 45 minutes

Brunswick Heads is the one town on this stretch where you can genuinely spend a week on foot. The village, the Brunswick River, Simpsons Creek, Torakina Beach and Main Beach are all within a short walk of each other, and the monthly market and the summer carnival happen on the riverfront. It is also the closest of these bases to Byron Bay, without Byron's crowds and parking. More in our Brunswick Heads destination guide.

Choose it if you want cafés, the pub and the water within walking distance, you are travelling as a mixed group of ages, or you plan to spend a day or two in Byron Bay.

Think twice if you want a quiet beach to yourself in January. Brunswick Heads is the busiest village on this stretch over summer, and the town foreshore parks are off-limits to dogs.

HolidayCo. North Coast has more homes in Brunswick Heads than anywhere else on the coast, from two-bedroom units for couples to houses for groups of nine or ten. See the Brunswick Heads properties.

New Brighton and South Golden Beach: for quiet beaches

At a glance

  • Pace: very quiet, beachside
  • Calm water: limited
  • Off-leash beach: yes, at both villages
  • Byron Bay: about 25 minutes
  • Gold Coast Airport: about 40 minutes

Just north of the Brunswick River, these two small beachside villages in North Byron Shire are what many people picture when they think of a quiet NSW beach holiday: streets that end at the sand, very little traffic and long beaches with room to spread out. Both have off-leash dog beaches, and South Golden Beach is patrolled by lifeguards over the summer school holidays.

Choose it if you want a quiet beach, you are bringing the dog, or you are happy to cook at home most nights.

Think twice if you want to walk to dinner. Shops and restaurants are limited, so you will usually drive to Brunswick Heads or Ocean Shores.

💡 Worth Knowing
New Brighton and Brunswick Heads face each other across the mouth of the Brunswick River, but there is no bridge at the coast. Getting from one to the other means driving inland around the river, which takes around 10 minutes. It is worth knowing before you book a home in one village expecting to walk to the other.

Ocean Shores: for a residential base with space

At a glance

  • Pace: residential and leafy
  • Calm water: limited
  • Off-leash beach: a short drive, at New Brighton or South Golden Beach
  • Byron Bay: about 20 minutes
  • Gold Coast Airport: about 40 minutes

Ocean Shores is the largest of the North Byron Shire communities, a leafy residential area set back from the coast, with Marshalls Creek running through it, an 18-hole golf course and the Ocean Village Shopping Centre for groceries. The beaches at New Brighton and South Golden Beach are a few minutes' drive east, and Byron Bay is about 20 kilometres south.

Choose it if you want a practical base with shops on hand, you play golf, or you plan to split your time between the beach and the Byron hinterland.

Think twice if walking to the beach matters to you. From most of Ocean Shores, the beach is a drive rather than a stroll.

Pottsville-WebGeneral-16

Pottsville: for young families

At a glance

  • Pace: relaxed village
  • Calm water: Mooball Creek
  • Off-leash beach: yes, South Pottsville
  • Byron Bay: about 35 minutes
  • Gold Coast Airport: about 30 minutes

Pottsville, on the Tweed Coast, is built around Mooball Creek, which stays calm year-round and is where most families with small children spend their afternoons. The village is compact and flat, the surf beach is a short walk away, the South Pottsville off-leash beach is close by, and markets run on the first and third Sunday of the month. It is also the closest of these towns to Gold Coast Airport.

Choose it if your children are under ten, you are flying into the Gold Coast, or you want a village that feels like a traditional family beach holiday.

Think twice if Byron Bay is a big part of your plans. It is about 35 minutes south, which is fine for a day trip but not for popping in for dinner.

Pottsville is HolidayCo. North Coast's second-largest group of homes, mostly three and four-bedroom family houses.

💡 Worth Knowing
New Brighton has very little dry beach at high tide, and Byron Shire's rules keep dogs on the wet sand anyway. Check the tide chart before you go and aim for the two or three hours either side of low tide, when the beach is wide, firm and much easier on a dog's legs.

HastingsPoint-WebGeneral-3

Hastings Point, Bogangar and Cabarita Beach: for surf

At a glance

  • Pace: small surf villages
  • Calm water: Cudgera Creek
  • Off-leash beach: yes, South Cabarita
  • Byron Bay: about 40 minutes
  • Gold Coast Airport: about 25 minutes

A few minutes north of Pottsville, these three villages run into each other along the Tweed Coast. Cabarita Beach (in the suburb of Bogangar) has a well-known surf break beside Norries Headland, a strip of cafés and restaurants, and weekend lifeguard patrols through the warmer months. Hastings Point is smaller again, with Cudgera Creek and a rocky headland that is good for exploring at low tide.

Choose it if you or your teenagers surf, you like a smaller village with a few good places to eat, or you want to be close to Gold Coast Airport.

Think twice if you have toddlers who need calm water every day. Pottsville's creek is a short drive, but it is not on the doorstep.

Five questions to help you decide

  • Do you want to leave the car parked? Brunswick Heads is the clear choice.
  • How old are the kids? Under ten points to Pottsville or Brunswick Heads for the calm creeks. Teenagers will thank you for Cabarita. Our family holidays guide goes into more detail.
  • Is the dog coming? New Brighton, South Golden Beach and Pottsville have off-leash beaches a short walk from many homes. See our pet friendly holidays guide.
  • Where are you flying into? Gold Coast Airport suits Pottsville and Cabarita. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport, about 40 minutes south of Brunswick Heads, suits the Byron Shire villages.
  • When are you travelling? Over the peak of summer, the quieter villages can feel like a different coast to Brunswick Heads. Our summer school holidays guide covers the busiest and quietest weeks.

💡 Worth Knowing
A common mistake is choosing a base by how close it is to Byron Bay, then spending most of the week somewhere else. On a week-long stay, Byron Bay usually ends up being a day or two out rather than the whole holiday. Choose the town that suits the other five days, and treat Byron as the day trip.
