Late afternoon on Mooball Creek in Pottsville, the tide is coming in clear and slow over the sand. A toddler is sitting in water up to her middle, an older brother is trying to stand up on a paddleboard for the fifth time, and their parents are close enough to the edge to hold a conversation. Nobody is watching for waves, because there are none.
That is the quiet advantage of the NSW North Coast for families. Between Pottsville and Brunswick Heads, almost every village has a sheltered creek or river inlet a short walk from an open surf beach. Little ones get calm water, older kids get waves, and the drive between the two is usually measured in minutes rather than hours.
This guide covers where young children can swim safely, which beaches are patrolled and when, what to do when the weather turns, and how to pick a holiday home and a town that suit your family's ages and pace.
Where can young kids swim safely on the North Coast?
The safest swimming for young children on this stretch of coast is in the tidal creeks: Mooball Creek at Pottsville, Simpsons Creek at Brunswick Heads, Cudgen Creek at Kingscliff and Cudgera Creek at Hastings Point. Confident swimmers and older kids can use the surf beaches, but only between the flags on patrolled days.
Calm water creeks
- Mooball Creek, Pottsville: calm year-round and the centre of family life in Pottsville. Kids paddle, swim and learn to paddleboard here, and the foreshore is a declared dog prohibited area, which many parents of small children quietly appreciate.
- Simpsons Creek, Brunswick Heads: a protected tidal inlet running behind the beach on the town side. It is shallow and sheltered but not patrolled. A footbridge crosses to Main Beach, so families can split the day between creek and surf without moving the car.
- Cudgen Creek, Kingscliff: a wide creek mouth at the southern end of Kingscliff, popular for paddling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.
- Cudgera Creek, Hastings Point: a small, scenic creek beside the headland. The creek mouth is a protected area for nesting shorebirds, so stay inside the signed areas and away from the bird zones.
💡 Worth Knowing
Every one of these creeks is tidal. On a run-out tide the water near each creek mouth flows surprisingly fast, even when the surface looks flat. Plan creek swims for the incoming tide and keep small children well up the creek from the mouth.
Patrolled beaches and when they are patrolled
Patrol days on this coast change with the season, so it pays to check before you head down with a car full of boogie boards. Based on the most recent published schedules from Byron Shire Council and Tweed Shire Council:
- Brunswick Heads Main Beach: council lifeguards five days a week over the summer school holidays (last season ran 20 December to 26 January) and over the April school holidays, plus Surf Life Saving volunteers on weekends and public holidays, 9am to 5pm.
- South Golden Beach: council lifeguards seven days a week over the summer school holidays.
- Cabarita Beach and Kingscliff: patrolled on weekends from the September school holidays through to the April school holidays.
- Hastings Point: patrolled on weekends from the Christmas school holidays through to the April school holidays.
Outside those times, the rule on both councils is simple: no flags, no swim. The 2026 to 2027 summer schedules are usually confirmed by the councils in December, so check the latest dates before your trip.
Things to do with kids beyond the beach
- Northern Rivers Rail Trail: the Tweed section runs about 24 kilometres between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek on a former railway line, so the grades are gentle. The highlight for most kids is the 524 metre Burringbar Range Tunnel, which is dark inside, so bring proper bike lights. Bike hire is available in Murwillumbah and Mooball, and many families ride a short out-and-back section rather than the full length. Rail trail information.
- Tropical Fruit World, Duranbah: a working tropical fruit farm near Kingscliff with farm tours, fruit tastings and animals, which tends to hold the attention of everyone from toddlers to teenagers. Tropical Fruit World.
- Rock pools and headlands: the headlands at Hastings Point and Cabarita (Norries Headland) have rock platforms worth exploring at low tide. Go with an adult, check the tide first and stay off the outer rocks when there is any swell running.
- Markets: weekend markets in Brunswick Heads and across the region are an easy morning out with kids, with food, music and plenty of space. Our North Coast markets guide has days and locations.
Byron Bay is a short drive south of Brunswick Heads for a day trip, and summer brings a full calendar of events. See what's on in Brunswick Heads and what's on in Byron Bay for this season's line-up.
What to do with kids on the North Coast when it rains
Summer on the North Coast brings warm, humid days and the occasional heavy afternoon storm, so it is worth having a wet weather plan in the back pocket.
Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre in Murwillumbah is free to enter and open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. It sits on a hill overlooking the Tweed Valley towards Wollumbin, has an on-site café, and runs free volunteer-guided tours at 11.30am daily. It is an easy pairing with a short rail trail ride if the weather clears. Note that the gallery closes for a few days over Christmas. Tweed Regional Gallery.
The Gold Coast's theme parks and indoor attractions are roughly an hour's drive north of Pottsville, which makes them a realistic rainy day option for older kids.
💡 Worth Knowing
Queensland does not use daylight saving, so from October to early April the Gold Coast runs an hour behind the North Coast. A 10am opening time on the Gold Coast is 11am on your holiday house clock, and the same goes for booked sessions and restaurant reservations over the border.
How to choose a family holiday home
The house matters more on a family holiday than on almost any other trip, because so much of the day happens there: early breakfasts, afternoon naps, sandy feet and long evenings once the kids are in bed.
- Bedrooms and beds. Check the bed configuration, not just the number of bedrooms. A three-bedroom home with a queen in every room suits two couples; the same home with bunks in the third room suits a family of five far better.
- Walking distance to calm water. A common mistake is booking a beachfront home on an open surf beach with toddlers in tow, then driving to a creek every day. For families with young children, a short walk to Mooball Creek or Simpsons Creek often beats an ocean view.
- Outdoor space. A fenced yard means kids can play outside while dinner is being made. If the home has a pool, check that it is fenced, and whether it is heated if you are visiting outside summer.
- The practical stuff. A washing machine, a barbecue, parking for more than one car, and space to dry wetsuits and towels make a week with kids noticeably easier.
HolidayCo. North Coast manages homes across Pottsville, Hastings Point, Bogangar, Brunswick Heads, New Brighton, Ocean Shores and South Golden Beach, from beach cottages to spacious family homes. The Pools & Spas collection is a good starting point for families visiting in summer, and our local team (formerly Brunswick Heads Holidays) can tell you which homes are an easy walk to calm water.

Which North Coast town suits your family?
Pottsville: best for toddlers and young children
Pottsville is built around Mooball Creek, and that shapes the whole holiday. The village is flat and compact, the creek is calm year-round, and the surf beach is a short walk away for older kids. If your children are under eight, this is the easiest base on the coast. More in our Tweed Shire destination guide.
Brunswick Heads: best for mixed ages and car-free days
Brunswick Heads gives you Simpsons Creek for the little ones, a patrolled surf beach over the footbridge for the older ones, and a village where you can walk to breakfast, the river and dinner. It suits families with a spread of ages who would rather leave the car parked. See the Brunswick Heads destination guide.
Hastings Point, Bogangar and Cabarita: best for families who surf
These neighbouring villages on the Tweed Coast suit families with confident swimmers and teenagers who want surf. Cabarita is patrolled on weekends through the warmer months, Cudgera Creek and the Hastings Point headland are on the doorstep, and Pottsville's creek is a few minutes' drive south.
New Brighton, South Golden Beach and Ocean Shores: best for space and quiet
In North Byron Shire, these three villages are quieter than Brunswick Heads and often have larger homes with more yard space, particularly in Ocean Shores. South Golden Beach is patrolled over the summer school holidays, and Brunswick Heads is a short drive away for the creek and the village.
Bringing the dog as well?
Plenty of families travel with the dog too, and the North Coast makes that easy as long as you know the rules. Mooball Creek's foreshore and the Brunswick Heads town parks are dog prohibited, but off-leash beaches are a short walk away in both towns. Our guide to pet friendly holidays on the North Coast covers every off-leash beach and the pet friendly collection lists homes where the whole family is welcome.
Planning a North Coast family holiday
The best family holidays on this coast come down to calm water close by, a surf beach with flags when the kids want waves, and a home that makes the in-between hours easy. HolidayCo. North Coast is a local team, and matching families to the right town and the right house for their children's ages is exactly what we can help with. With summer school holidays starting on 18 December, the most popular family homes book out early, so check availability for your dates sooner rather than later.
FAQ's
For young children, Pottsville and Brunswick Heads are the easiest bases. Both have a calm tidal creek a short walk from a surf beach and compact, walkable village centres. Families with older kids who surf often prefer Cabarita or Hastings Point.
Simpsons Creek, the protected tidal inlet on the town side of the beach, is the usual choice. It is shallow and sheltered but not patrolled, so stay close and swim on the incoming tide.
Mooball Creek is calm year-round and is one of the most popular family swimming spots on the Tweed Coast. As with any tidal creek, currents are stronger near the mouth on a run-out tide, so keep young children further up the creek and supervise closely.
Yes, at set times. Council lifeguards patrol Brunswick Heads Main Beach five days a week over the summer and April school holidays, and Surf Life Saving volunteers patrol on weekends and public holidays, 9am to 5pm. Check the council's current schedule before you go.
NSW Term 4 ends on Thursday 17 December 2026, so the summer holidays begin on Friday 18 December. Term 1 2027 starts on Wednesday 3 February 2027 for Eastern division schools and Monday 10 February for Western division schools.
The Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre in Murwillumbah is free and open Wednesday to Sunday, and Tropical Fruit World at Duranbah suits most ages. The Gold Coast's indoor attractions and theme parks are about an hour north of Pottsville.
Yes. The Tweed section between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek follows an old railway line, so it is mostly gentle, and kids usually love the 524 metre Burringbar Range Tunnel. Bring bike lights for the tunnel and plan a shorter section with younger riders.
Yes, during daylight saving. From October to early April, NSW is one hour ahead of Queensland, so Gold Coast opening times and bookings are an hour later on NSW time.
Check the bed configuration as well as the bedroom count, how far the home is from calm water, whether there is a fenced yard or fenced pool, and practical extras such as a washing machine and parking for two cars.
For the summer school holidays, book as early as you can. Larger family homes and homes close to Mooball Creek and Simpsons Creek are usually the first to go.
