Featured Winemakers and Vineyards

Andrew Ling & Agitate Wines

Andrew Ling’s winemaking journey began somewhat by chance in 2001 as a vintage lab assistant — a role he took as a favour to his soccer coach. What started as a temporary gig turned into a lifelong passion, leading him to senior positions at renowned wineries in Mudgee, Orange, and the Hunter Valley. In 2017, Ling took the helm at Carillion Wines, and by 2021, he launched his own label, Agitate Wines. Focusing on minimal intervention, Ling crafts wines that are “raw and textured,” emphasising the natural characteristics of each varietal and terroir. Agitate Wines has quickly gained recognition for vibrant, unfiltered, and unfined wines, making Ling a standout in the local wine scene.

M&J Becker Wines

Bridging continents, Meagan and James Becker’s winemaking journey spans from California’s lush vineyards to the rich soils of New South Wales. After honing their craft in Sonoma, they established M&J Becker Wines in 2015, choosing varietals that showcase the unique terroirs of both the US and Australia. Their work in the Hunter Valley includes a collaborative winemaking facility where they share innovations with other vintners, blending tradition with experimentation. Committed to organic practices at their Ablington Vineyard, they continue to push the boundaries of sustainable winemaking.

Peta Kotz & Sabi Wabi Wines

Peta Kotz’s Sabi Wabi label reflects her mission to challenge the Hunter Valley’s winemaking norms. Launched in 2019, the label embraces the philosophy of “beauty amongst imperfection” through minimal intervention. Kotz experiments with alternative vessels such as ceramic and neutral oak, combined with methods like skin contact and carbonic maceration, to produce textured, complex wines. Her innovative approach earned her the 2022 Young Gun Winemaker’s Choice award, cementing her place as one of the region’s most exciting winemakers.

Spotlight on Marco Lubiana

Named the 2024 Young Gun of Wine, Marco Lubiana represents the pinnacle of innovative Australian winemaking. Launching his label in 2018, Lubiana focuses on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Tasmania’s Lucille Vineyard, recently converted to biodynamic farming by his family. His meticulous vineyard practices and minimal winery intervention allow the terroir to shine through every bottle, highlighting the full potential of Tasmania’s signature varieties.
